De Cock en danse macabre by A.C. Baantjer

De Cock en danse macabre book cover

Why read the book?

A valuable collection of old silver vanishes from a house on the Keizersgracht. The owner is said to have died of a heart attack. His niece, the only heir, comes to report the matter to De Cock at the Warmoesstraat station.

A vague, uneasy feeling settles on the detective. On the surface this is not his case, yet he suspects that the collector's death does not add up.

He sets out with Vledder to look into it. The trail leads him into one of his strangest cases, as more single antique collectors are found dead in homes that have been robbed.

Favourite quote

The sweet swaying gave him a cheerful feeling of carefree gladness.

What I Loved

The pattern is what makes this one tick. Heart attacks look natural, so the crime hides in plain sight, and only De Cock's instinct says otherwise. That gives the puzzle a quiet menace.

The canal-side Amsterdam setting and the world of antique collectors fit the story well. De Cock trusts his unease and follows it, which is the series at its most characteristic.

Key Takeaway

A death that looks natural can still be a crime, and a trained instinct is worth listening to.
