Cowboy in Paris by Jul

Cowboy in Paris book cover

Why read the book?

While hauling the Daltons back to prison, Lucky Luke meets the French sculptor Bartholdi, touring the West with a giant hand and torch to raise funds for the Statue of Liberty. A prison owner named Locker covets the very land set aside for the statue, so Luke takes on the job of protecting the project.

Then his government sends him to Paris to escort Lady Liberty across the sea. In the City of Lights he meets Gustave Eiffel, Victor Hugo, Claude Monet, Rimbaud and Verlaine, and even the Daltons get tangled in the gags. Jolly Jumper, as ever, is along for the strange journey.

Favourite quote

I have guarded gold and cattle, but never a lady this size.

What I Loved

Jul and Achde send Luke somewhere new, and the Paris half is a delight, stuffed with famous faces and warm jokes about the French. The link between the Wild West and the Statue of Liberty makes a clever, surprising hook.

The Daltons popping up to cause trouble keeps the classic spirit alive in a modern entry.

Key Takeaway

Luke leaves the West to shepherd the Statue of Liberty from Paris to New York.
