Bride of Lucky Luke by Guy Vidal

Why read the book?
The town of Purgatory is dying for want of women, so a convoy of brides rolls west to marry its men, and Lucky Luke is talked into guiding them. Most matches take hold, but Jenny O'Sullivan, a forthright Irishwoman with iron morals, finds her intended, Teddy Degan, jailed before the wedding. The mayor even schemes to marry Jenny to Luke and pin a sheriff's star on him.
The Daltons, fresh from another escape, then kidnap Jenny to force Luke off their backs. Her relentless good manners and endless Irish stew wear the brothers to nervous wrecks. Luke trades her freedom for Teddy's, and rides out with the gang while the wedding goes ahead.
Favourite quote
I will have my wedding, and you four will sit up straight and eat your stew.
What I Loved
The idea of the Daltons undone not by guns but by good manners and stew is a fine joke, and Jenny is a splendid, immovable presence.
The mail-order bride premise gives the album a warm, busy cast, and the mayor's plot to trap Luke into marriage adds a nice squirm. It is lighter Goscinny-era spirit carried on by Guy Vidal, gentle and good-humoured.
Key Takeaway
The toughest thing to inflict on a Dalton is relentless politeness.
