Apache Canyon by René Goscinny

Why read the book?
Luke is dispatched to learn why the army and the Apache are forever at war in the territory. He soon sees the absurdity of it. The canyon of the title can easily be skirted, yet the Colonel insists on marching his wagons straight through it, knowing full well the Apache will roll boulders down on his head.
Caught between Patronimo's band and O'Nollan's troops, Luke is treated as a traitor by each side as he tries to talk sense into them. Restoring peace means curing the stubborn pride that keeps the killing going.
Favourite quote
There is a way round this canyon, Colonel. There is always a way round.
What I Loved
The humour comes from sheer obstinacy on both sides, with the pointless march through the canyon as a perfect running gag.
Goscinny pokes fun at military pride and tribal honour alike, and Luke's role as exhausted peacemaker is warmly drawn.
Key Takeaway
Most wars carry on simply because nobody will admit there is an easier path.
